As a filmmaker and photographer based in Colorado Springs, I have the privilege of capturing special moments in the lives of my clients. Recently, I had the honor of photographing a family session for April and her four wonderful children—Michael, Samantha, Bethany, and Darrin—as well as their beloved dog, Dexter. This session was particularly poignant because Dexter is nearing the end of his life, and the family wanted to create lasting memories with their cherished pet.
A Beautiful Family, A Special Bond
On a sunny afternoon, we gathered at Ute Valley Park, a stunning location in Colorado Springs known for its beautiful landscapes and serene atmosphere. The park holds a special place in the hearts of April and her family, making it the perfect backdrop for this important session. Dexter, despite his age, seemed to sense the significance of the day, and his presence added a layer of emotion to every shot.
Capturing the Essence of Family
We started our session near the park’s picturesque trails, where the kids—Michael, Samantha, Bethany, and Darrin—ran ahead, their laughter echoing through the trees. It was evident how much they loved Dexter and each other. Michael, the eldest, shared stories of Dexter’s playful antics from his younger days, while Samantha, Bethany, and Darrin stayed close, whispering sweet words to their furry friend.
As a photographer, these unscripted moments are the most precious. The genuine smiles, the tender hugs, and the unspoken bond between a family and their pet are the memories that photos can preserve, long after the moments have passed.
A Walk Through Nature
We walked through the park’s trails, finding beautiful spots along the way. Dexter’s eyes lit up as he explored the familiar surroundings, and the children’s joy was palpable. April walked beside Dexter, her hand gently resting on his back, a picture of love and devotion. These interactions showcased the deep bond they all shared, making the session even more meaningful.
At one point, we stopped at a scenic overlook, where the sunlight filtered through the trees, casting a warm glow on the family. Here, I captured individual portraits of the children with Dexter, each one showcasing their unique relationship with him. Michael’s shot was one of quiet reflection, Samantha’s full of playful energy, Bethany’s brimming with tenderness, and Darrin’s filled with a mix of admiration and love.
A Lasting Legacy
This session was not just about capturing images; it was about preserving a legacy. Dexter has been a loyal companion, a confidant, and a source of unconditional love for April and her children. As Dexter’s time on this earth comes to an end, these photos will serve as a reminder of the joy he brought into their lives and the deep bond they shared.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this special moment. It’s sessions like these that remind me why I became a photographer—to capture the fleeting moments, the raw emotions, and the beautiful connections that make life so rich and meaningful.

Thank you, April, Michael, Samantha, Bethany, Darrin, and Dexter, for allowing me to capture these precious memories at Ute Valley Park. It was a day filled with love, laughter, and a few tears, and I am grateful to have witnessed and documented it all.
