Surprise engagement photoshoot tips at the summit of Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak Engagement

A few months back I got the opportunity to capture this special day for these sweet couple. Since it was a surprise proposal we had to work with any kind of weather and situation. Thankfully everything worked out, and she said YES!

Here are a few tips for making sure your surprise proposal goes smoothly at Pikes Peak summit.

The Weather:

It can get rough out there at the summit. It’s 14,115 feet above sea level, so it has its own climate! It can be totally different than what you experience in Colorado Springs at around the base. You can use this link to find the latest weather updates.

Within the one hour that we were up there we experienced sunshine, snow, and hail all at the sametime!

Directions, driving, and fees:

It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive all the way up to the summit. Right now you can’t reach the summit with your own vehicle and have to take a shuttle for the last few miles. They are currently working on fixing up the railroad up there, so access is very limited. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to drive, and get to the summit.

There is currently a $10-$15 per person charge for driving up the road to the summit. You can find more information on their website and purchase tickets in advance if you like.

Where to propose?

Since it’s a very popular destination, you can expect to have a lot of people there right at the summit’s base camp. There is a restaurant and a shop there where most of the people will be hanging out. Don’t forget to try their fresh donuts!

Once you step outside you get the beautiful views overlooking Colorado. They say you can even see Kansas on a clear day!

Once you get outside and start walking towards the trail, you can skip the crowd. There are plenty of good locations and spots to make your proposal there.
