Introduction: My Costa Rica Travel Guide

In August, I had the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable adventure — my very first trip to Costa Rica. This Costa Rica travel guide shares the highlights of my journey across diverse regions, from lush volcano landscapes to serene coastal escapes.

Landing in Liberia, I set off to explore both well-loved and lesser-traveled destinations in the north. The country’s vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery, and welcoming people left a lasting impression on me.

Exploring Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna

One of the most iconic stops on any Costa Rica travel guide is the Arenal Volcano. Towering above La Fortuna, the volcano sets a dramatic backdrop for adventure. My days were filled with exploring lush forests, crossing rivers, and soaking in the area’s natural hot springs.

Even though it was the rainy season, the occasional showers only added to the magic. The misty atmosphere gave the entire region a cinematic feel, and the landscapes were a photographer’s dream.

Tilarán: Windy Views and Local Connections

Another highlight of my trip was the windy town of Tilarán. Known for its sweeping views and constant breezes, it was unlike anywhere else I visited.

But what made Tilarán truly unforgettable wasn’t just the scenery — it was the people. I spent an afternoon with a local neighbor who didn’t speak my language. Through gestures, smiles, and laughter, we connected while enjoying time with his dogs and cows. This reminded me that the essence of travel isn’t only in the sights — it’s in the human connections we make along the way.

Costa Rica’s Coastal Beauty: Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Conchal

No Costa Rica travel guide would be complete without the coast. I explored the vibrant beaches near Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo, each offering unique experiences.

But it was Playa Conchal that stole my heart. Famous for its white crushed-shell sand and turquoise waters, it felt like stepping into paradise. The calm shoreline was the perfect place to reflect, recharge, and simply take in the beauty of Costa Rica.

Travel Tips for Costa Rica

Here are a few tips I’d include in any Costa Rica travel guide:

Rent a 4x4 SUV: Many roads are rugged, especially in remote areas. A sturdy vehicle ensures you won’t miss out on hidden gems.

Set up phone service right away: At the Liberia airport, you can quickly arrange local service, which makes traveling far easier.

Expect rain during green season: Showers are usually brief, and the lush landscapes that follow are worth it.

Food and Culture: A Taste of Costa Rica

Costa Rican cuisine is as vibrant as its landscapes. I enjoyed fresh rice and beans served with fish, and sampled tropical fruits bursting with flavor. Every meal was a reminder of the country’s rich culture and deep connection to the land.

For couples considering a destination elopement in Costa Rica, incorporating local dishes into your celebration would be an incredible way to honor the place and culture.
