One of the most common questions couples ask before their photography session is, "What should we wear?"

If you're wondering what to wear for a Colorado couple session, you're in the right place. From choosing colors that complement the landscape to coordinating outfits and dressing for changing mountain weather, a little preparation can make a big difference in how your photographs look and feel.

It's a good question. You want your outfits to look great in photographs, complement the Colorado scenery, and still feel like you. But standing in front of your closet trying to coordinate two outfits can quickly become more complicated than expected.

The good news is that you don't need an elaborate wardrobe or matching outfits to look great in your photos. A few thoughtful choices can make a big difference.

Whether you're planning an engagement session at Garden of the Gods, exploring a mountain location, or enjoying a relaxed couple session somewhere in Colorado, this guide will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable throughout the experience.

As a Colorado engagement photographer, I help couples plan sessions that feel natural, relaxed, and true to their personalities. Here's what I recommend when deciding what to wear.

What to Wear for a Colorado Couple Session: 7 Styling Tips

1. Coordinate Your Outfits Instead of Matching

One of the easiest ways to create a beautiful look is to coordinate your outfits without wearing exactly the same colors.

You want your clothing to complement each other while still allowing both personalities to come through.

For example, if one person wears a cream or beige outfit, the other might choose olive green, brown, denim, or a soft neutral tone.

Some color combinations that photograph beautifully include:

  • Cream and olive green

  • Tan and rust

  • Beige and soft blue

  • Brown and ivory

  • Navy and neutral tones

  • Muted green and warm earth tones

The goal is to create a balanced look rather than making both outfits identical.

2. Choose Colors That Complement Colorado's Landscape

Colorado has an incredible variety of scenery, and your location can help guide your outfit choices.

At Garden of the Gods, warm earth tones, cream, beige, rust, and muted greens work beautifully against the red sandstone formations.

For mountain locations surrounded by pine trees, forests, and alpine scenery, neutral colors, soft blues, olive green, and earthy tones are great options.

If you're visiting an alpine lake, lighter neutral colors can create a beautiful contrast against the water and surrounding mountains.

You don't need to match the landscape exactly. Instead, choose colors that complement the environment without competing with it.

3. Add Layers and Texture to Your Outfits

Layers and textures can add depth and visual interest to your photographs.

Instead of relying entirely on color, think about how different fabrics and materials work together.

Some great options include:

  • Knit sweaters

  • Denim jackets

  • Leather jackets

  • Linen shirts

  • Textured dresses

  • Scarves

  • Wool coats

  • Embroidered jackets

Layers are especially useful in Colorado, where temperatures can change throughout the day.

A jacket or sweater can also give you a slightly different look without requiring a complete outfit change.

4. Dress for the Season and Weather

Colorado weather can be unpredictable, particularly in the mountains.

A warm afternoon can quickly turn into a chilly evening, and mountain temperatures are often much cooler than those in Colorado Springs or Denver.

Here's what I'd consider for each season.

Spring

Spring can bring a mix of sunshine, cooler temperatures, and occasional snow, especially at higher elevations. Consider light layers, comfortable jackets, and outfits that allow you to adjust throughout the session.

Summer

Summer offers more flexibility with clothing. Dresses, linen shirts, lightweight fabrics, and relaxed outfits work beautifully. If you're visiting a mountain location, bring an additional layer for cooler temperatures.

Fall

Fall is one of my favorite seasons for Colorado photography. Warm earth tones, sweaters, jackets, and textured layers complement the golden aspen trees and changing landscape.

Winter

For winter sessions, prioritize warmth without sacrificing style. Wool coats, sweaters, boots, scarves, and neutral layers can look incredible against snowy landscapes.

The most important thing is to stay comfortable. If you're cold throughout the session, it's much harder to relax and enjoy the experience.

5. Choose Comfortable Shoes

This is something couples sometimes overlook when planning their outfits.

Even if your session takes place at an easily accessible location, we'll likely be walking, exploring, and moving between different photographic areas.

Colorado trails can include uneven ground, gravel, rocks, and dirt paths. High heels or uncomfortable shoes can quickly become frustrating.

A few good options include:

  • Comfortable boots

  • Stylish sneakers

  • Leather ankle boots

  • Flat sandals for warmer weather

  • Shoes with good traction for mountain locations

You can always bring a second pair of shoes if you want something different for a few photographs.

Comfortable footwear makes it easier to move naturally and enjoy the session.

6. Avoid Bright Neons and Large Logos

Your photographs should focus on the two of you, your connection, and the experience you're sharing.

Large logos, bold graphics, and extremely bright colors can draw attention away from those moments.

Neon colors can also create strong visual contrasts against natural Colorado landscapes.

That doesn't mean you need to avoid all color. Muted blues, greens, burgundy, rust, and other softer tones can add personality while still complementing the environment.

When in doubt, simpler clothing with interesting textures is usually a great starting point.

7. Bring Two Outfit Options

If your session includes enough time, bringing a second outfit can add variety to your gallery.

For example, you could start with something casual and relaxed, then change into something slightly more dressed up.

A few combinations might include:

  • Jeans and a nice shirt, followed by a dressier outfit.

  • A casual sweater and boots, followed by a flowing dress.

  • Neutral everyday clothing, followed by coordinated outfits with more texture.

You don't need multiple outfit changes to have a great session. One well-coordinated outfit is more than enough.

But having a second option can be a nice way to create variety, especially during longer sessions.

What Not to Wear for a Colorado Couple Session

Knowing what to avoid can be just as helpful as knowing what to wear.

Here are a few things I'd generally recommend staying away from:

  • Large logos or distracting graphics.

  • Neon or overly saturated colors.

  • Identical matching outfits.

  • Clothing with too many competing patterns.

  • Stiff formalwear that limits movement.

  • Shoes that make walking uncomfortable.

  • Outfits you constantly need to adjust.

You should be able to walk, sit, hug, laugh, and move naturally without worrying about your clothing.

Remember, the goal isn't to look like someone else. It's to feel comfortable and confident being yourselves.

A Few More Tips Before Your Session

Once you've chosen your outfits, there are a few small things worth doing before your session:

  • Try on both outfits together before the session day.

  • Make sure everything fits comfortably and allows you to move.

  • Steam or iron clothing ahead of time.

  • Bring an extra layer if temperatures might drop.

  • Avoid getting a haircut or trying a completely new hairstyle the day before.

  • Bring water, especially if we're photographing at higher elevations.

If you're traveling to Colorado from another state, give yourself enough time to plan your outfits and pack everything you need.

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Wear for a Colorado Couple Session

What colors photograph best for Colorado couple sessions?

Earth tones, neutrals, cream, beige, olive green, rust, soft blues, and muted colors generally work beautifully against Colorado's natural landscapes. The best combination depends on your location and the season.

Should couples wear matching outfits for engagement photos?

I recommend coordinating rather than matching. Choose colors and styles that complement each other while allowing each person to express their own personality.

Should we bring multiple outfits?

You can, especially if you're booking a longer session. A casual outfit and a slightly dressier option can add variety to your gallery. For shorter sessions, one well-coordinated outfit is usually enough.

What should we wear for engagement photos at Garden of the Gods?

Warm neutrals, earthy tones, cream, beige, rust, olive green, and soft blue all photograph beautifully against the red sandstone formations. Comfortable shoes are also important because we'll likely explore different areas of the park.

What should we wear for winter engagement photos in Colorado?

Think warm layers, wool coats, sweaters, boots, scarves, and textured fabrics. Neutral colors and earthy tones look especially beautiful against snowy mountain scenery.

Can you help us choose our outfits before the session?

Absolutely. I'm happy to offer outfit recommendations based on your location, the season, and the overall look you're going for. You don't need to figure everything out on your own.
