Sometimes the best sessions are the ones that happen spontaneously. A recent family gathering at Stanford University turned into a heartwarming photo session filled with laughter, joy, and connection — the kind of day that reminds me why I love family photography at Stanford University so much.

With Grandma visiting from out of town, the family wanted to make the most of their time together. And what better place than the iconic Stanford campus — with its red-roofed buildings, palm-lined walkways, and California sunshine lighting up every smile?

Celebrating Family Bonds

As a photographer, there’s something timeless about capturing families just as they are — unposed, joyful, and genuine. From Grandma’s warm hugs to the youngest little one with a runny nose, every frame told a story of love and connection that words can’t fully capture.

Family sessions like this are some of my favorites because they’re a chance to pause life for a moment and celebrate what really matters. I talk a lot about that approach in my Family Photography Packages — keeping sessions relaxed, natural, and full of heart.

Exploring Stanford’s Beauty

Stanford University is full of stunning backdrops for photography. We wandered through the Main Quad, stopped under towering archways, and explored hidden corners where the afternoon light hit just right. From blooming gardens to the long, tree-lined paths, every spot offered something special.

I often find that beautiful locations bring out the best in families — people laugh more, move more freely, and simply enjoy being together. That’s part of why I love outdoor sessions like those featured in my Colorado Elopement Guide — the surroundings add another layer of storytelling.

Living in the Moment

Between posing for portraits, there were moments of spontaneous laughter and pure connection. Those are the moments I live for as a photographer — when families forget about the camera and just enjoy each other’s company.

It’s the same feeling I aim for in my Engagement & Proposal Packages, where couples can relax and be themselves. Whether it’s a proposal at Garden of the Gods or a family gathering at Stanford, the energy is the same: honest and heartfelt.

Looking Toward the Future

As the day came to an end, everyone left with smiles and full hearts. The family already talked about planning another shoot next year, and I can’t wait to see how their story continues to unfold. Capturing families over time is one of the most rewarding parts of my work — watching love evolve through every chapter.

If you’re planning your own family session, you’ll find helpful tips and examples in my Resources section, including what to wear, how to prep, and ways to make the most of your time together.

If you’d love to capture your family in a meaningful, relaxed, and scenic way — whether in California, Colorado, or anywhere in between — I’d be honored to document it for you.
