As a Colorado Springs family photographer, I’m reminded time and time again how powerful a single photo can be in preserving memories that mean the most. Recently, I had the honor of photographing April and her four children — Michael, Samantha, Bethany, and Darrin — along with their beloved dog, Dexter.

This session was especially meaningful. Dexter has been with the family for many years and is nearing the end of his life, so this wasn’t just another photoshoot — it was a chance to celebrate his love, his loyalty, and the deep connection he’s shared with the family.

A Beautiful Family and a Special Bond

We met on a sunny afternoon at Ute Valley Park, one of Colorado Springs’ most scenic natural areas, known for its wide-open trails, tall grasses, and peaceful atmosphere. The park holds a special place in April’s heart, making it the perfect spot for such an important session.

Despite his age, Dexter seemed to understand the day’s significance. As he walked beside the kids, tail wagging and eyes bright, it was clear how much joy he brought into their lives. Every smile, every hug, and every shared look between family members carried a mix of gratitude and love.

Capturing the Essence of Family

We began near one of the park’s winding trails where the kids ran ahead, their laughter echoing through the trees. Michael, the eldest, shared stories of Dexter’s younger days — how he’d chase balls endlessly and sneak onto the couch. Samantha, Bethany, and Darrin followed close behind, whispering kind words and giving Dexter gentle pats as we walked.

These are the moments I love most in family photography — unscripted, genuine, and full of emotion. The smiles, the soft embraces, and even the quiet pauses tell the story of what family really means.

A Walk Through Nature and Memory

As we explored the park’s golden fields and tree-lined paths, the afternoon light wrapped everything in a warm glow. April walked beside Dexter, her hand gently resting on his back — a moment that said more than words ever could.

When we reached one of Ute Valley’s overlooks, I captured portraits of each child with Dexter. Every image reflected their unique relationship — Michael’s quiet reflection, Samantha’s joy, Bethany’s tenderness, and Darrin’s admiration. It was a touching way to honor their bond and create tangible memories for years to come.

This session wasn’t about posing or perfection — it was about legacy. Dexter has been a loyal companion, a constant through every chapter of the family’s journey. These photographs now serve as a lasting tribute to his love and the joy he brought into their lives.

Sessions like this remind me why I love what I do. Photography allows us to hold onto moments that might otherwise fade — the love, the laughter, and the quiet beauty of being together.
