Why This Colorado Springs Christmas Family Session Meant So Much To Me

There are some families you photograph once. There are others who start to feel like your own. Melissa and her family are definitely the second kind for me. I first photographed them at Garden of the Gods, and it quickly became one of my favorite sessions. You can see that story here: Melissa, Ali, Mo, Hediyeh, Melody, and Ryan at Garden of the Gods.

This winter, they invited me to their home for a colorado springs christmas family session, and it meant more to me than I can fully explain. It was not just another job. It felt like being welcomed back by friends.

A Beautiful Home Filled With Warmth and Holiday Spirit

Melissa’s home sits in a gorgeous neighborhood in Colorado Springs. It is modern, full of natural light, and decorated beautifully for the holidays. Outside, the house has clean lines and stone details. Inside, the Christmas tree glowed with soft, warm light and ornaments that felt collected with care over the years.

But what stood out to me the most was not the house itself. It was the energy inside. From the moment I walked in, they treated me like one of their own. Ali welcomed me warmly and made sure I had everything I needed. Mel cracked jokes and kept everyone laughing. The kids ran around excited and full of joy, dressed in their holiday outfits. Hedia and Mo were kind, present, and supportive. And Melissa, as always, was the heart that kept everyone connected and comfortable.

We started with group photos outside in front of the house, capturing the whole family together in the afternoon light. After that, we moved indoors and gathered everyone around the Christmas tree. The combination of the warm decor, the natural light, and their genuine connection made everything feel easy and natural to photograph.

A Session That Meant More Than Photography

Last Christmas was a difficult time for me personally. My mom was in Iran taking care of my grandpa, who later passed away, and I spent the holidays feeling pretty alone in Colorado. Being far from family during that season is not easy.

Melissa and her family did not know every detail of what I was going through, but they opened their home and hearts to me without hesitation. After we finished the session, they invited me to stay for food and a drink. We sat together, talked, laughed, and shared stories. For a moment, it did not feel like I was working. It felt like I was with family.

I will always be grateful for that evening. This colorado springs christmas family session reminded me that photography is not only about images. It is about people. It is about moments when you feel seen and cared for, even when life is heavy.

Why At Home Christmas Sessions Feel So Special

I love photographing families outdoors in places like Garden of the Gods, but at home sessions have a different kind of magic. They feel grounded in real life and real memories. Years from now, the kids will look back and remember what the living room looked like, how the tree was decorated, and how it felt to be surrounded by grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

At home sessions:

  • Help everyone feel more relaxed and natural

  • Make it easier for kids to be themselves

  • Include the home as part of the family story

  • Capture details that matter, like holiday decor and traditions

  • Create a gallery that feels deeply personal

This is exactly what I love about lifestyle family photography. It is not only about perfect poses. It is about honest moments and the feeling of being together.
