Some moments only happen once, and a garden of the gods surprise proposal is one of the most unforgettable ways to begin your next chapter together. When Clemencio reached out to me about proposing to Angelica during their trip from San Antonio, Texas, we immediately began planning a sunrise proposal at one of my favorite locations inside Garden of the Gods, Three Graces.
A surprise proposal is one of them.
When Clemencio reached out to me about proposing to Angelica during their trip from San Antonio, Texas, we immediately began planning a sunrise proposal at one of my favorite locations inside Garden of the Gods, Three Graces.
After photographing hundreds of surprise proposals over the years, I’ve found that sunrise consistently creates the most peaceful and intimate experience. The soft morning light, cooler temperatures, and quiet trails allow couples to truly enjoy the moment without large crowds.

Planning a Garden of the Gods Surprise Proposal
Garden of the Gods offers countless beautiful locations, but Three Graces has always been one of my favorites for sunrise sessions.
The towering sandstone formations create an incredible backdrop while remaining surprisingly peaceful early in the morning. We planned to meet at Parking Lot #7, which provides quick access to the trail and allows us to reach the overlook before most visitors arrive.
One of my favorite parts about photographing proposals is helping couples choose locations that feel both beautiful and personal. Every proposal deserves more than simply showing up and hoping for the best.
If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration, I’ve put together an entire guide dedicated to becoming a Garden of the Gods Proposal Photographer, including my favorite proposal locations throughout the park.
How We Planned the Surprise
Like many surprise proposals, keeping everything natural was the key.
I arrived early with my camera mounted on a tripod, pretending to photograph the sunrise and the incredible rock formations surrounding Three Graces.
To anyone walking by, I simply looked like another landscape photographer enjoying a Colorado morning.
Meanwhile, Clemencio and Angelica casually walked toward the overlook.
As they reached the perfect spot, everything unfolded exactly as we had planned.
Clemencio dropped to one knee.
Angelica’s expression immediately changed from curiosity to complete surprise, followed by excitement, laughter, and happy tears.
Those genuine reactions are impossible to recreate, and they’re exactly why I love photographing surprise proposals.
Along with documenting the proposal through photography, I was also able to capture the moment on video so they can relive one of the biggest days of their lives for years to come.
Watch Their Garden of the Gods Surprise Proposal
Photographs capture a single moment in time, but video allows you to experience the emotion as it unfolds.
I was able to film Clemencio and Angelica’s garden of the gods surprise proposal from start to finish, capturing everything from the anticipation before the proposal to the excitement that followed. If you’re planning your own proposal, this video gives you a great idea of what a sunrise experience at Three Graces looks and feels like.
Whether you’re looking for inspiration or simply want to see how a surprise proposal naturally unfolds, I hope you enjoy watching this special moment unfold.
Exploring Garden of the Gods After the Proposal
After congratulating the newly engaged couple, we spent the rest of the session exploring some of my favorite areas around Three Graces.
One of the best parts about sunrise sessions is how relaxed everything feels.
There’s no rush.
No crowded trails.
Just incredible scenery, beautiful light, and the opportunity to slow down and celebrate together.
Clemencio and Angelica were honestly some of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure of photographing. Spending the morning with them felt less like work and more like taking a walk with two friends who happened to get engaged.
We captured a variety of engagement portraits featuring the dramatic red rock formations, winding trails, and the incredible Colorado landscape that makes Garden of the Gods such a special place.
Why I Recommend Sunrise for Every Garden of the Gods Surprise Proposal
If couples ask for my recommendation, I almost always suggest sunrise.
Over the years, I’ve photographed proposals during every season and nearly every hour of the day, and sunrise continues to provide the best overall experience.
Some of the biggest advantages include:
Beautiful soft morning light that’s flattering for portraits.
Cooler temperatures during warmer months.
Much fewer visitors throughout the park.
A quieter and more intimate atmosphere.
More flexibility to photograph in iconic locations like Three Graces.
A relaxed pace without feeling rushed.
The experience feels less like a busy tourist attraction and more like having one of Colorado’s most beautiful parks almost entirely to yourselves.
