Riley and Michaela’s surprise engagement photography session at Garden of the Gods, captured during a warm Colorado summer surrounded by iconic red rock formations.

Riley and Michaela’s summer surprise proposal at Garden of the Gods was filled with golden light, relaxed energy, and that quiet anticipation that something meaningful was about to happen. Summer in Colorado Springs brings longer days, vibrant color, and a lively atmosphere that makes proposals feel joyful, intentional, and unforgettable.

As a Garden of the Gods surprise proposal photographer, I help couples plan moments that feel genuine, unforced, and true to who they are. This summer proposal was exactly that.

Planning a Summer Surprise Proposal at Garden of the Gods

What began as a relaxed couple photography session slowly transformed into something unforgettable. Riley wanted the proposal to feel natural rather than staged, and summer is perfect for that kind of experience.

We planned the session around golden hour to take advantage of softer evening light and cooler temperatures. Garden of the Gods in summer offers expansive skies, glowing red rocks, and an energetic yet romantic feel that works beautifully for surprise proposals when timing is planned thoughtfully.

If you are planning your own proposal, my Surprise Proposal Guide in Colorado

walks through timing, location ideas, and how to keep the moment truly surprising.

The Proposal Moment

Midway through the session, with the red rock formations glowing in the summer sun, Riley took a deep breath and got down on one knee. Michaela’s reaction was immediate and full of emotion. Laughter, happy tears, and a heartfelt yes filled the space around them.

Summer proposals often feel especially alive. The warmth, the light, and the open landscape create a sense of freedom that makes the moment feel effortless and real. Nothing was rushed or overplanned. It simply unfolded naturally.

After the proposal, we continued with relaxed portraits that captured their excitement, connection, and the start of a brand new chapter together.

A First Professional Photography Session Together

Afterward, Michaela shared that this was their very first professional photography session as a couple. Creating an experience that felt comfortable, fun, and authentic was incredibly important to me.

Summer sessions allow couples to move, laugh, explore, and be fully present with each other. The longer daylight gives us flexibility, and the environment helps couples forget about the camera and focus on the moment they are sharing.

This is why surprise proposal photography in Colorado Springs is some of the most meaningful work I do.
