Colorado Winter Elopement Guide (2025-2026)

Colorado winters bring something magical. The snow, the stillness, the glowing mountains, the quiet trails, and the feeling that the world is holding its breath for your vows. If you are dreaming about saying your “I do’s” in fresh snow or celebrating with a ski run together, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

This page is built from real winter elopements I’ve photographed across Breckenridge, Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, and everywhere in between. With the right planning, winter can be one of the most beautiful and emotional times to elope in Colorado.

Why Elope in Colorado in Winter

Colorado winter elopements are perfect for couples who want something peaceful, dramatic, and unforgettable. Winter brings:

  • Quiet trails and fewer crowds

  • Snow covered mountain peaks

  • Soft winter light that makes images look cinematic

  • More privacy and intimate moments

  • Romantic details like hot cocoa, cozy jackets, and warm blankets

  • Lower travel and lodging costs in many mountain towns

If your dream elopement includes adventure, nature, and unique scenery, winter is one of the best times to get married in Colorado.

Best Places for a Colorado Winter Elopement

Winter works differently at every elevation. Here are some of the most reliable and beautiful locations for snowy elopements.

Breckenridge and Summit County

Breckenridge is one of the most iconic winter towns in Colorado. Snow is almost guaranteed, and mountain views are incredible from sunrise to sunset.

It is also the best area for ski elopements and winter lodge celebrations.

You can see more examples inside my blog posts, including my Breckenridge winter elopements and Pikes Peak summit elopements.

Pikes Peak and Crystal Reservoir

Pikes Peak sits above 14,000 feet, which means winter conditions can be extreme, windy, and cold. Crystal Reservoir and the lower sections can be easier to manage, but always expect snow and freezing temperatures.

If you love dramatic mountain backdrops and the feeling of being on top of the world, this area is unforgettable.

If you want a deeper dive into this location, visit the Guide to Getting Engaged at Pikes Peak and my Pikes Peak elopement stories.

Garden of the Gods in the Snow

Garden of the Gods becomes a completely different place in winter. The red rocks mixed with fresh snow create colors that you cannot find anywhere else in Colorado.

This location is perfect if you want something accessible, stunning, and a bit warmer than the high mountains.

For planning help and more examples, visit the Garden of the Gods Elopement Guide.

Other Winter Friendly Locations

Rocky Mountain National Park, Loveland Pass, Sapphire Point, Woodland Park, and Divide all offer incredible winter scenery depending on your comfort with cold weather and snow.

“Bobak is so fun and made our elopement photos absolutely perfect. We had them at the Garden of the Gods and the scenery was so beautiful. He made everything so comfortable and got our pictures done so fast. These are some of the most memorable pictures we have and I just can’t get over how wonderful he did! 10/10 will use him again!”

Ski Elopements in Colorado

Colorado ski elopements are becoming one of the most exciting ways for adventurous couples to get married. Imagine saying your vows at sunrise, slipping on your skis, and carving your first run together as newlyweds.

A ski elopement works best if:

  • Both of you can ski confidently

  • You feel comfortable moving around the mountain in your wedding outfits

  • You want a playful and adrenaline filled day

  • You want photos that feel alive and unforgettable

Best mountains for ski elopements:

  • Breckenridge

  • Keystone

  • Copper Mountain

  • Loveland

  • Winter Park

Tips for ski elopements:

  • Choose a weekday to avoid crowds

  • Keep your outfits warm and flexible

  • Plan for lift closures and changing weather

  • Pack warm gloves, layers, and hand warmers

  • Have a backup location in case winds are too strong

Weather, Roads, and Winter Safety

Colorado winters can change fast. One moment it is calm and sunny, and an hour later the wind picks up or a snowstorm moves in. Winter planning is all about being prepared and flexible.

Here is what to keep in mind:

  • Temperatures: Breckenridge often sits between 0 and 25 degrees. Pikes Peak can reach single digits or below zero. Garden of the Gods is warmer but still cold.

  • Wind: Higher elevations can have strong gusts.

  • Road Conditions: Mountain passes may have traction laws or closures.

  • Backup Plans: Always have a Plan A, Plan B, and sometimes even a Plan C.

  • Sunlight: Winter daylight is shorter, so timelines need to be tighter and earlier.

This is where I guide every couple personally. I help you pick a safe and beautiful location, track weather patterns, monitor road conditions, and design a flexible timeline so everything goes smoothly.

Colorado Winter Elopement FAQ

What month is best for a winter elopement in Colorado?

December through March are the most reliable months for snow. December and January bring the coldest temperatures and the deepest winter feel. February and March often bring softer weather with beautiful fresh snowstorms. I help every couple choose the best date based on weather patterns and elevation.

How cold does it actually get during a winter elopement?

Temperatures vary depending on location. Breckenridge usually sits between 0 and 25 degrees. Pikes Peak can reach single digits or below zero. Garden of the Gods is often warmer with temps between 20 and 40 degrees. Cold weather is part of the experience, and I help you prepare for it with layers, hand warmers, and a flexible plan.

Can we elope at Pikes Peak in winter?

Yes, but winter conditions at Pikes Peak can be extreme. Roads may close due to ice or wind and temperatures can drop quickly. I always track road status and weather patterns and help you choose safe locations at different elevations.

What do we wear for a Colorado winter elopement?

Warm layers under your outfit make all the difference. Fleece leggings, insulated boots, gloves, shawls, capes, and hand warmers help you stay comfortable. I also help with outfit ideas that photograph beautifully in winter settings. You can see more ideas in my What to Wear guide.

Do we need a permit for a winter elopement in Colorado?

Permits depend on the location. Garden of the Gods does not require a permit. Many mountain areas, state parks, and national forests may require one, even in winter. I guide you through the process so everything is handled correctly.

How do we plan a timeline with such short daylight?

Winter days are shorter, especially in the mountains. Sunrise happens later and sunset comes early, so timelines need to be tighter. I help build a custom schedule that fits the season, the light, and your vision for the day.

What happens if a snowstorm hits on our elopement day?

We prepare backup plans from the start. This might include lower elevation locations, alternate routes, or shifting to a later time within the same day. Winter weather can be unpredictable, and I guide you through safe and beautiful options.

Can we bring guests to a winter elopement?

Yes. Just keep in mind that cold weather, snow, and icy paths can be challenging for some guests. I help you pick easy access locations if you want family or friends to join.

“Bobak made our elopement session magical! My husband and I are from out of state, and he helped us every step of the way planning a time and place. He was excellent helping us with posing, photo ideas, and everything in between. He was a great communicator and answered any and all of my questions within great time. I cannot say enough good things about Bobak! He’s an excellent photographer and person! Would recommend to anyone!”
