Some portrait sessions are less about posing and more about simply documenting connection exactly as it already exists.
That was the feeling throughout this session with Randi and her dog AL at Garden of the Gods.
Randi was visiting Colorado and wanted photographs that captured their adventurous spirit together while exploring one of the most beautiful locations in Colorado Springs. Between the towering red rock formations, warm evening light, and AL’s playful personality, the entire session felt relaxed, candid, and full of genuine moments.
As a Colorado Springs portrait photographer, I love photographing people with their pets because the connection always feels honest and natural. A great garden of the gods pet photography session is not about creating perfection. It’s about preserving the little moments, expressions, and energy that make your relationship unique.

Why Garden of the Gods Is Perfect for Garden of the Gods Pet Photography
Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite locations for pet and portrait sessions because it offers so much variety while still feeling peaceful and natural.
The winding trails, dramatic sandstone formations, mountain views, and open spaces create the perfect environment for relaxed outdoor photography. Pets also tend to feel more comfortable in locations where they can move naturally rather than being confined to a studio setting.
For Randi and AL’s session, we explored several scenic areas throughout the park while allowing plenty of room for candid interaction and spontaneous moments along the way.
Some of my favorite photographs came from the in-between moments where AL’s personality completely took over the frame.

Portrait Sessions That Feel Relaxed and Real
One thing I always want clients to feel during a session is comfortable enough to simply enjoy the experience.
That matters even more when pets are involved.
Animals do not care about perfect posing or camera angles. They respond to energy, movement, and connection. That’s why I keep sessions calm, flexible, and natural instead of overly structured.
Randi and AL made this session incredibly easy because their connection already carried the story on its own. The laughter, movement, and quiet moments between them felt authentic without needing much direction.

Capturing Meaningful Moments With the People and Pets You Love
One of the beautiful things about portrait photography is that it can document relationships of every kind.
Sometimes that means couples.Sometimes families.Sometimes friendships. And sometimes it means documenting the bond between someone and the dog who has been beside them through different seasons of life.
Sessions like this are reminders that the photographs people treasure most are often the ones that feel emotionally real.
