There are destinations that impress you with beautiful scenery.
Then there are places that completely immerse you in nature.
Costa Rica was one of those places for me.
I traveled there with my camera, a backpack, and a sense of curiosity, looking forward to slowing down and experiencing one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. I wasn’t photographing a wedding or an assignment. I simply wanted to explore, disconnect, and spend time surrounded by nature.
One of the highlights of my trip was staying at Antonio’s A-Frame Cabin near Santa Cruz.
Hidden within the forest, it felt like stepping into another world.
Towering trees surrounded the cabin. Tropical birds filled the mornings with sound. Sunlight filtered through the jungle canopy, and every day felt like an invitation to slow down and appreciate the world around me.
Of course, Costa Rica also reminded me that when you stay in the jungle, you’re sharing the space with its wildlife. I’ll never forget discovering a small scorpion on my bed during my first night. Thankfully, it was safely relocated outside, but it definitely became one of the more memorable stories from the trip.
Looking back now, it’s one of my favorite travel memories.

Why Visit Costa Rica? | Costa Rica Travel Guide
Costa Rica is one of those rare places where nature completely takes over.
Rainforests stretch across mountainsides, waterfalls hide deep within the jungle, monkeys swing through the trees, colorful birds fill the canopy, and beaches seem to appear around every corner.
What surprised me most wasn’t just how beautiful it was.
It was how alive everything felt.
Unlike many destinations where nature exists alongside cities, Costa Rica often feels like nature is in charge.
You’re simply the visitor.
Whether you’re hiking through cloud forests, relaxing beside the Pacific Ocean, spotting wildlife in national parks, or waking up to the sounds of the rainforest, Costa Rica encourages you to slow down and reconnect with the outdoors.
For anyone who loves photography, hiking, wildlife, or simply escaping everyday life, it’s an unforgettable destination.
My First Impression of Costa Rica
The first thing I noticed wasn’t the beaches.
It was the sound.
Birds.
Insects.
Wind moving through enormous trees.
Everything seemed alive.
After arriving, I quickly realized Costa Rica isn’t a place you simply look at.
You experience it.
The air feels different.
The humidity carries the smell of rainforest.
The pace of life slows down almost immediately.
Coming from Colorado’s mountains, it was refreshing to experience an environment that felt completely different yet equally connected to nature.
Instead of alpine forests and rugged peaks, I found lush vegetation, towering palms, tropical wildlife, and endless shades of green.
As a photographer, it was impossible not to feel inspired.
Every trail, every sunrise, and every quiet moment outside the cabin felt like another opportunity to simply observe.
Staying at a Jungle Cabin
One of my favorite memories from Costa Rica was staying at Antonio’s A-Frame Cabin near Santa Cruz.
Hidden among the trees, it offered exactly what I had hoped to find.
Peace.
Quiet.
Simplicity.
Large windows opened directly toward the forest, making it feel like the jungle was part of the cabin itself.
Every morning began with birds singing outside while soft light filtered through the surrounding trees.
Coffee somehow tasted even better surrounded by nature.
Rather than spending every minute driving between attractions, I found myself enjoying the slower moments.
Reading.
Editing photographs.
Watching wildlife from the porch.
Sometimes the best part of traveling isn’t constantly moving.
It’s finally having time to stop.
Wildlife and Jungle Living
Costa Rica constantly reminds you that you’re sharing the landscape with incredible wildlife.
Monkeys called from the trees.
Bright tropical birds flew overhead.
Butterflies drifted through the forest.
And yes…
there was also the unforgettable scorpion that decided to greet me my first night.
Thankfully, it was safely moved outside, and looking back, it became one of those stories that perfectly sums up the Costa Rican experience.
Nature isn’t something you observe from behind glass.
You’re living inside it.
That closeness to wildlife is one of the things I appreciated most about traveling here.
Every day brought another unexpected encounter.
Exploring Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty
One of the things I loved most about Costa Rica was how quickly the scenery changed.
Within a relatively short drive, I found myself moving between dense rainforest, quiet country roads, rolling hills, waterfalls, and beautiful stretches of coastline.
Every region seemed to have its own personality.
Although my trip centered around the Santa Cruz area and the peaceful jungle cabin where I stayed, I couldn’t help imagining how much more there was to discover throughout the country.
Places like Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, and the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula have become bucket-list destinations for travelers from around the world, and it’s easy to understand why.
Costa Rica rewards curiosity.
Some of the best moments happen when you leave room for unexpected stops along the way.
A quiet dirt road.
A roadside fruit stand.
A hidden waterfall.
A troop of monkeys crossing overhead.
Sometimes the journey becomes even more memorable than the destination.
Photography Tips for Costa Rica
Costa Rica is an incredible place for photography, but it also presents a few unique challenges.
Changing weather, dense forests, and humid conditions require a little preparation.
If you’re bringing a camera, I’d recommend packing:
A wide-angle lens for landscapes
A versatile zoom lens for wildlife and travel
Plenty of extra batteries and memory cards
A lightweight rain cover for your camera
A microfiber cloth to help with humidity
A comfortable backpack for hiking
One thing I learned quickly was to embrace the weather instead of waiting for perfect conditions.
Mist drifting through the rainforest often created my favorite photographs.
Soft, overcast light brought out the rich greens of the jungle, while brief rain showers added atmosphere that sunshine simply couldn’t.
Costa Rica reminded me that nature doesn’t need perfect weather to be beautiful.
Helpful Costa Rica Travel Tips
After spending time exploring Costa Rica, here are a few things I’d recommend.
Rent a Vehicle
Having your own transportation gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover places that many organized tours never visit.
Pack for Rain
Even during the dry season, tropical weather can change quickly.
A lightweight rain jacket is worth bringing everywhere.
Respect Wildlife
Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity is one of its greatest treasures.
Observe animals from a distance, never feed wildlife, and always leave natural areas exactly as you found them.
Slow Down
One of my favorite memories wasn’t a famous attraction.
It was simply sitting on the porch of the cabin, listening to the rainforest.
Costa Rica has a way of reminding you that not every great travel experience needs to be scheduled.
Best Time to Visit Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a year-round destination, but every season offers something different.
December through April is generally considered the dry season, bringing sunny days and making it the most popular time to visit.
May through November is the green season, when afternoon rain showers transform the forests into an even more vibrant landscape.
Personally, I think both seasons have something to offer.
Photographers often appreciate the softer light, dramatic clouds, and lush vegetation that come with the rainy season, while travelers seeking beach days and easier hiking conditions often prefer the dry months.
Regardless of when you visit, Costa Rica has a way of making every day feel like an adventure.
Where to Stay
Costa Rica offers accommodations for every type of traveler.
Luxury beach resorts, eco-lodges, mountain cabins, boutique hotels, and jungle retreats can all be found throughout the country.
For me, staying at Antonio’s A-Frame Cabin became one of the highlights of the trip.
It offered something many hotels can’t.
Silence.
Waking up surrounded by rainforest, drinking coffee while birds filled the trees, and ending the day beneath a sky full of stars became some of my favorite memories.
Sometimes where you stay becomes just as memorable as where you go.
Why Costa Rica Continues to Inspire Me
Looking back, I don’t just remember the jungle.
I remember how it made me feel.
Calm.
Curious.
Present.
Travel has a way of changing your perspective, and Costa Rica reminded me how important it is to slow down every once in a while.
To listen.
To observe.
To appreciate the natural world without constantly rushing to the next destination.
As a photographer, those lessons naturally influence the way I approach every session.
Whether I’m photographing a surprise proposal at Garden of the Gods, a family hiking through Colorado, or a destination celebration halfway around the world, I’m always looking for moments that feel authentic instead of staged.
Costa Rica reminded me that some of the best stories happen when we simply allow nature to set the pace.

I’d recommend at least one week.
That gives you enough time to experience multiple regions without constantly feeling like you’re on the move.
Is Costa Rica worth visiting?
Absolutely.
Between the wildlife, beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, and incredibly welcoming people, it became one of my favorite destinations in Central America.
Do you need a rental car?
For most travelers, yes.
Having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to discover places that many visitors never see.
