Nestled just outside Aspen, Colorado, Maroon Bells is often considered one of the most beautiful mountain destinations in North America. Towering fourteen-thousand-foot peaks, an alpine lake, vibrant wildflowers, and peaceful forests create a setting that almost feels unreal. It's the kind of place that reminds you why Colorado is such an incredible place to get married.

From a Surprise Proposal at Garden of the Gods to Their Maroon Bells Wedding

One of the things that made this wedding even more meaningful was that it wasn't the beginning of Jillian and Lucas' story.

Maroon Bells Amphitheater offers something that's incredibly difficult to find anywhere else in Colorado. The ceremony space feels private while showcasing one of the most breathtaking mountain backdrops imaginable. The towering Maroon Bells rise dramatically behind the amphitheater, creating a natural ceremony backdrop that hardly needs any decoration.

Guests arrive by shuttle through the White River National Forest, walk beneath towering aspens, and settle into the amphitheater surrounded by alpine scenery in every direction.

Although I had photographed throughout Colorado for years, this was actually my very first visit to Maroon Bells.

Whenever I'm photographing somewhere new, especially a location as iconic as Maroon Bells, I always like to arrive early. I never want to show up on a wedding day seeing a place for the first time.

The afternoon before Jillian and Lucas' wedding, I made the drive into the Aspen area and spent the evening exploring the trails around Maroon Lake, walking through the amphitheater, studying how the light moved across the mountains, and planning portrait locations for after the ceremony.

That evening, I stayed in a beautiful little barn near Four Mile Creek outside Glenwood Springs. After a quiet night surrounded by Colorado's mountain landscape, I woke up early feeling excited to return to Maroon Bells.

Scouting the location beforehand allowed me to slow down and fully experience the area before guests arrived. I already knew where the best light would be, where family portraits would work well, and where I wanted to take Jillian and Lucas after the ceremony.

A Beautiful Summer Wedding at Maroon Bells Amphitheater

July couldn't have been more beautiful.

Blue skies stretched above the Elk Mountains while guests slowly gathered at the amphitheater, greeting one another before taking their seats. The atmosphere felt calm, joyful, and full of anticipation.

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings like this is watching all the little moments happen before the ceremony even begins.

Parents hugging.

Friends laughing together.

Family members helping with final details.

Quiet conversations between generations.

Those small moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs in the entire gallery because they tell the complete story of the day.

As everyone settled into the amphitheater, Jillian made her entrance surrounded by one of the most spectacular ceremony backdrops Colorado has to offer.

Everything about the ceremony felt genuine.

There was no rush.

There was no pressure.

Just two people surrounded by the people who mattered most, exchanging vows beneath one of the most iconic mountain landscapes in the world.

The ceremony lasted around thirty to forty minutes, giving everyone time to simply be present, soak in the scenery, and celebrate this incredible milestone together.

After the ceremony concluded and everyone had a chance to congratulate the newlyweds, we spent some time capturing family photographs before saying goodbye to many of their guests.

One of the biggest advantages of getting married at Maroon Bells Amphitheater is that you don't have to travel anywhere else for breathtaking portraits. Some of Colorado's most iconic scenery is only a short walk from the ceremony site.

Once it was just the three of us, we wandered the trails surrounding Maroon Lake, taking our time and letting the day unfold naturally.
