A Rainy Sunrise Elopement | Garden of the Gods Elopement Photography with Gabrielle & Michael

Some mornings in Colorado feel like they belong in a movie. Soft mist drifts through the trees, the red rocks deepen in color, and the entire landscape takes on a quiet, almost dreamlike atmosphere. That was exactly the kind of morning I experienced while photographing Gabrielle and Michael's elopement at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, with their sweet dog Ruby right there to share the adventure.
Visiting all the way from Canada, Gabrielle and Michael chose to celebrate their marriage surrounded by Colorado's incredible scenery. We met early in the morning for their sunrise elopement, and although a gentle rain accompanied us throughout our time together, it only made the experience more beautiful.
The soft light, misty atmosphere, and rich red sandstone created a beautiful setting for their wedding day. We spent an hour together exploring the Central Garden area, capturing their connection, the excitement of getting married, and the little moments that made the morning uniquely theirs.
Garden of the Gods Elopement Photography on a Misty Morning
Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite places to photograph elopements in Colorado Springs. The towering sandstone formations, winding trails, and mountain views create an incredible backdrop, but what I love most is how different the park feels depending on the weather and time of day.
On this particular morning, the sky was overcast, and a gentle mist hung in the air. It wasn't pouring rain, just enough drizzle to give everything a fresh, moody look. The sandstone glowed with deeper shades of red and orange, the surrounding trees were full of autumn colors, and the clouds softened the entire landscape.
We explored the Central Garden area, taking advantage of the beautiful rock formations and quieter trails. Starting early gave us the opportunity to enjoy the park before it became busy, allowing us to slow down and capture natural moments without feeling rushed.
This is one of the reasons I love Garden of the Gods elopement photography. Every visit feels a little different, and even when the weather doesn't go according to plan, the landscape can create something truly special.
If you're considering getting married at this iconic Colorado location, my Garden of the Gods elopement guide covers helpful details to consider when planning your own day.
Gabrielle, Michael, and Ruby: A Colorado Adventure Together
One of my favorite parts of photographing elopements is getting to document the little things that make each couple's story unique. For Gabrielle and Michael, that included having Ruby right there with them.
Dogs are part of the family, and including them in an elopement can make the experience even more meaningful. They're there for the adventures, the everyday moments, and so many of the memories couples build together. Having Ruby along made this morning feel even more personal.
Throughout our time together, we captured Gabrielle and Michael walking hand in hand along the trails, sharing quiet moments, and enjoying the incredible surroundings. Ruby joined them along the way, too, making the photographs a reflection of their adventure as a family.
My approach to photography is to give couples enough direction to feel comfortable while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments to unfold. I want you to enjoy your wedding day rather than feel like you're spending it posing for a camera. The laughter, little glances, and spontaneous interactions often become some of the most meaningful photographs.

Why Rain Can Make a Garden of the Gods Elopement Beautiful
When couples plan an outdoor wedding, weather is often one of the biggest concerns. That's understandable, especially when you're traveling from another state or country and have limited time in Colorado.
But a little rain can create some incredible photographic opportunities.
Wet sandstone takes on richer colors, overcast skies provide soft light, and mist adds depth and atmosphere to the landscape. The scenery feels different from a typical sunny morning, giving the photographs their own distinct character.
Gabrielle and Michael's elopement was a wonderful reminder that you don't need perfect weather to have a meaningful wedding day. We embraced the conditions, enjoyed the morning, and made the most of what Colorado gave us.
Of course, safety and comfort always come first. Heavy rain, lightning, or dangerously slippery conditions may require changing plans. But when the weather is mild, a little drizzle doesn't necessarily mean you need to cancel your outdoor elopement.
If you're planning a visit to the park, my Garden of the Gods photoshoot tips offer helpful advice on timing, weather, and preparing for your photography experience.
