South Colony Lakes Colorado

Nestled within the rugged wilderness of Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, South Colony Lakes offers one of the state’s most awe-inspiring backcountry experiences. I recently set out on a short but unforgettable backpacking trip to this remote alpine paradise with my companions, Amoo Ardalan and my dog, Aspen. What followed was a journey filled with breathtaking vistas, challenging weather, and moments of complete peace beneath the stars.

From the first step to the final sunrise, this trip reminded me why I love being outdoors — the unpredictability, the quiet power of nature, and the joy of simply existing in wild places.

The Journey to South Colony Lakes Colorado

Our adventure began early in the morning with a scenic drive from Colorado Springs to South Colony Lakes, a route that winds through forest roads and mountain passes for just over ten miles. The closer we got, the more the landscape transformed — rugged peaks framed the horizon, and the crisp mountain air carried the scent of pine and rain.

After parking at the trailhead, we hoisted our packs and began the climb. The trail was alive with color — wildflowers blooming between granite boulders and alpine birds calling from the trees. Despite looming storm clouds, the weather held until we reached the lakes. Then, as if on cue, the skies opened up.

Within minutes, rain poured down in sheets, drenching everything. But even as we huddled under the shelter of our tent, laughter and camaraderie filled the air. There’s something beautiful about being reminded that nature always has the final say.

Day Two: Testing Our Resolve

The next morning greeted us with clear skies and renewed determination. Our goal: Humboldt Peak, one of Colorado’s 13,000-plus-foot summits overlooking the South Colony Basin. The trail began gently but soon grew steeper, cutting across rocky switchbacks and loose scree.

As we climbed, the views expanded — the twin Crestone Peaks stood tall to the west, and the alpine lakes shimmered far below. Yet as the weather shifted and winds picked up, we made the difficult but wise choice to turn back before the final push to the summit. Safety always comes first in the mountains.

Still, there was no disappointment — only gratitude. The hike reminded me that sometimes the best adventures aren’t about conquering summits but about listening to the land and respecting its limits.

Reflections from the Trail

Back at camp, we spent the evening soaking in the serenity of the lakeside. The water mirrored the peaks, the air cooled to a perfect stillness, and the stars began to appear one by one. Aspen curled up beside the fire as we shared stories of past climbs and future dreams.

Moments like these — far from the noise of the world — are what I live for. They remind me that adventure doesn’t have to be grand or far-flung to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a night under the Colorado sky, surrounded by friends and mountains.

Final Thoughts

Our night amidst the majesty of South Colony Lakes Colorado was more than a backpacking trip — it was a reminder of resilience, gratitude, and the simple joy of being present in nature. The mountain tested us, rewarded us, and left us humbled.
