In 2018, I set out on a road trip to Gilan, Iran, with two of the most important people in my life — my dad and my grandpa. What began as a simple getaway became one of the most meaningful adventures I’ve ever experienced, filled with stunning scenery, laughter, and moments I now cherish deeply.

Exploring the Natural Beauty of Gilan Province

Gilan, located in Northern Iran, is known for its lush forests, misty mountains, and rice paddies stretching as far as the eye can see. As we drove through winding roads, the scenery shifted into a breathtaking mix of towering trees, rolling hills, and quiet countryside.

It felt like a world away from the bustling city — a peaceful retreat into nature’s embrace, and a perfect canvas for storytelling and photography.

Grandpa’s Spirit of Adventure

At 90 years old, my grandpa still had an incredible sense of adventure. He was always my inspiration for exploring the world, and seeing his excitement during this trip made it unforgettable.

As we drove, he shared stories from his childhood in Iran, his past travels, and the way the landscape had changed over the decades. His enthusiasm was contagious — a reminder of why I love the outdoors and why I feel so connected to exploration.

Quality Time with My Dad

This trip was also about reconnecting with my dad. Life often gets busy, and moments like these — just the two of us on scenic roads, sharing stories and laughter — felt rare and valuable.

We enjoyed the simple pleasures: driving through mountain passes, talking about life, and stopping to enjoy a traditional Persian meal of warm bread, fresh cheese, and hot tea.

A Perfect Day in Nature

That day, everything aligned beautifully. The weather was cool and refreshing, the roads quiet, and the natural beauty around us felt almost magical.

As the sun set, we found a quiet spot by a river. We sat together, listening to the water, reflecting on the day, and simply enjoying being present. It was grounding, peaceful, and a reminder of how precious time with loved ones truly is.

A Legacy of Exploration

Not long after, my grandpa passed away. Today, his adventurous spirit lives on in me — pushing me to explore new places, seek beauty in nature, and cherish the fleeting moments that make life extraordinary.

This road trip to Gilan, Iran wasn’t just a journey through breathtaking landscapes. It was a journey through family, love, and the timeless gift of adventure.

Final Reflections on My Gilan Road Trip

This trip reaffirmed my love for travel and the importance of capturing memories, whether through photographs, stories, or simply living them fully.

If you ever have the chance to take a road trip through Gilan Province, I can’t recommend it enough. Between the lush scenery, the rich culture, and the warmth of its people, it’s a place that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
