There’s something special about sunrise at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Before the crowds arrive and before the music starts echoing through the amphitheater later in the day, everything feels still. Quiet. Almost sacred.
That’s exactly what made Annabelle and Gordon’s sunrise proposal feel so meaningful.
Gordon had traveled all the way from the UK to propose to Annabelle in Colorado, and from the very beginning, it was clear how much intention and care he was putting into the experience. Their red rocks amphitheatre surprise proposal felt intimate, emotional, and incredibly personal from beginning to end.
I first connected with Annabelle’s cousin through email, and from there Gordon and I started planning everything together behind the scenes. Since I had not photographed a proposal at Red Rocks Amphitheatre before, I actually drove up the night before and camped nearby in my car so I could scout the area properly and make sure everything would go smoothly at sunrise.
That extra preparation mattered.
When couples trust me with moments this important, I want to do everything possible to make the experience feel easy, calm, and unforgettable.
Planning a Surprise Proposal at Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Planning a surprise proposal at Red Rocks takes a little more strategy than most people realize.
Lighting changes quickly at sunrise, parking and timing matter, and it helps tremendously to know exactly where everyone should walk before the moment happens.
The night before the proposal, I explored the area carefully and mapped out the best location for privacy, lighting, and overall atmosphere. I also sent Gordon detailed directions and a few simple WhatsApp videos showing exactly where to go so there would be zero confusion the morning of the proposal.
Those little details make a huge difference.

Instead of stressing, Gordon could stay fully focused on the moment itself.

The morning could not have been more beautiful.
As the sun slowly began rising over the horizon, Gordon walked Annabelle into the amphitheater while I stayed hidden nearby with both photo and video ready to capture the moment naturally.
And then it happened.
He got down on one knee.
She said yes.
The emotion hit instantly.
The quiet morning air, the red sandstone glowing with sunrise light, and the emotion between them made everything feel incredibly intimate and real.
After the proposal, we spent time walking through Red Rocks together capturing portraits around the amphitheater and nearby overlooks while the morning light continued pouring into the landscape.
One of the things I loved most about this session was how relaxed and connected they were together. Nothing felt performative or forced. It just felt honest.

A Moment I’ll Never Forget
At the very end of the session, something happened that genuinely stayed with me.
Before we left, Gordon prayed for me.
As someone who is not particularly religious, it honestly caught me off guard in the most beautiful way possible.
It was such a sincere and deeply human moment.
We talked about life, suffering, family, and even the pain and uncertainty happening in Iran right now. For a few minutes, it stopped feeling like I was simply photographing clients.
It just felt like people connecting with each other.
I remember sitting in my car afterward feeling emotional and humbled that I had been trusted with such an important moment in their lives.
Those are the experiences that remind me why I love this work so much.
Not just the photographs.
The people.
