Hey everyone, I’m Bobak Radbin, a photographer based in Colorado Springs. I’m lucky to live close to some of the most colorful, creative, and lively communities in the state — and few events capture that spirit better than the Emma Crawford Coffin Races & Festival in Manitou Springs.

Each year, this mountain town nestled beneath Pikes Peak transforms into a celebration of imagination, history, and a touch of the macabre. In 2023, I had the absolute privilege of photographing this incredible event — and trust me, it’s every bit as wild and wonderful as it sounds.

The Story Behind Emma Crawford

Before we dive into the fun and festivities, it’s worth remembering the legend that inspired it all. Emma Crawford moved to Manitou Springs in the late 1800s, seeking the healing powers of the mountain air for her tuberculosis. Sadly, she passed away young, and her dying wish was to be buried atop Red Mountain.

Years later, heavy rains caused her coffin to slide down the mountainside — and the story became local folklore. Decades later, the Emma Crawford Coffin Races were born to honor her memory with laughter, creativity, and community spirit.

You can actually visit nearby Red Mountain Trailhead today — one of the most scenic hikes in the area, perfect for history lovers and adventurers alike.

The Coffin Races: A Celebration of Creativity

Now this is where the real fun begins! Teams from all over Colorado design their own custom-built coffins — some spooky, some hilarious, some absolutely mind-blowing in detail. Each team has one “Emma” riding inside the coffin and four “pallbearers” pushing it down Manitou Avenue in an all-out race.

As a Manitou Springs event photographer, I couldn’t have asked for a more dynamic setting. The mix of costumes, laughter, and competitive energy made every frame a story of its own. I loved capturing those split-second expressions of joy and determination — the kind of moments that make local traditions like this so special.

Festival Vibes and Community Spirit

Beyond the races, Manitou Springs transforms into one giant celebration. The streets fill with vendors, musicians, families, and plenty of locals in Halloween-inspired costumes. The atmosphere is festive, inclusive, and filled with laughter.

It’s the kind of event that reminds you why I love being a Colorado photographer — there’s always something happening that brings people together through creativity and joy.
