There’s something magical about photographing food that’s as vibrant as the people who make it. My recent food photography session at Pokeatery California reminded me why I love this craft — fresh ingredients, genuine hospitality, and a shared passion for flavor.

As a Colorado Springs food photographer, I’m drawn to restaurants that celebrate creativity through simplicity. Pokeatery’s focus on Pacific Rim cuisine and sustainable, locally sourced ingredients instantly stood out. From the moment I stepped inside, I was surrounded by color — golden mango cubes, ruby-red tuna, and the deep greens of seaweed and avocado.

Capturing Culinary Artistry

Each poke bowl felt like its own piece of art. The team assembled ingredients with care, layering textures and colors until each creation looked like something from a painter’s palette. My goal was to honor that artistry through clean, bright compositions that mirrored the restaurant’s fresh-and-modern energy.

Behind the Lens

I used a mix of natural light and soft directional fill to accentuate the freshness of the ingredients without overpowering their color. Photographing food like this is about more than composition — it’s about showing how texture, light, and taste intersect. Every droplet of sauce, every grain of rice, every slice of fish tells part of the story.

That same balance of art and authenticity runs through my Branding & Lifestyle Sessions, where I collaborate with restaurants, artisans, and small businesses to visually capture their identity.

The People Behind the Plates

Of course, Pokeatery’s heart lies with its team. Watching the chefs work with precision and care — greeting guests, laughing together, perfecting each bowl — reminded me how much human connection shapes every dining experience. Their pride in their craft made this shoot feel less like work and more like friendship.
