After more than a year without seeing my dad, I finally got the chance to surprise him during a Bay Area trip this April. My dad had flown in from Iran to visit my sister, and I knew I had to make the trip out to California to spend time together after so long. It turned out to be one of the most meaningful and memorable vacations with him.
I borrowed my sister’s car and took my dad on a spontaneous road trip to Monterey. We strolled along Cannery Row, took in the ocean views, and just enjoyed being in each other’s company again. Monterey’s coast never disappoints—and neither did the smiles on our faces.
With my sister off work for the following two days, the adventures continued. Day one was all about Santa Cruz, where we wandered through local spots, soaked in the beach-town vibes, and just had fun. On day two, we went full tourist-mode in San Francisco. From cable cars to Chinatown, it was a classic SF day topped with an amazing meal at House of Nanking—a legendary Chinese restaurant that’s been around for over 30 years.
On one of our final days, we returned to Santa Cruz, this time with my dad and Uncle Farzad. It was another great day of bonding and storytelling, walking along the beach and enjoying the scenery.
Before flying back, I spent some time relaxing with my sister Hoda and her sweet dog Simba. We snapped a few photos to capture the moment—and the memory of that peaceful, loving last day will stay with me.
This Bay Area family trip reminded me of how precious time is, especially with loved ones. I’m so grateful for the moments we shared and can’t wait to make more memories like this again soon.
