In 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to explore Northern Iran, visiting Rasht and Bandar Anzali in Gilan Province. This lush region along the Caspian Sea is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. With my camera in hand, I set out to capture its essence — from vibrant bazaars to peaceful wetlands and the warmth of everyday life.

Rasht Bazaar – The Heart of Northern Iran Travel Photography

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the famous Rasht Bazaar. This lively market is a feast for the senses: colorful spices, fresh seafood, handmade crafts, and the energy of vendors calling out their wares.

I photographed hardworking artisans, farmers selling their produce, and the intricate details of Persian handicrafts. For anyone passionate about Northern Iran travel photography, the Rasht Bazaar is a dream location.

Bandar Anzali & Mordab Lagoon – Serenity on the Caspian Sea

From Rasht, I made my way to Bandar Anzali, a beautiful port city on the Caspian. Nearby lies Mordab Lagoon (Anzali Lagoon), one of the most tranquil and biodiverse wetlands in the region.

Lush greenery, migratory birds, and glassy waters made it unforgettable. I spent hours photographing fishermen at work and the quiet reflections of sunrise over the lagoon. It was one of the most peaceful moments of my entire trip.

Traditional Gilan Houses – Stories in Wood and Color

Gilan Province is known for its wooden houses with sloped roofs, designed to withstand heavy rainfall. Exploring these old-style homes felt like stepping back in time.

The intricate woodwork, colorful balconies, and cozy courtyards told stories of resilience and simplicity. As a photographer, these homes offered some of the most character-filled images of the journey.

The People of Rasht & Bandar Anzali

Beyond landscapes and architecture, what I cherish most about my Northern Iran travel photography are the people.

• Fishermen casting nets into the Caspian

• Bakers preparing warm noon-e-barbari (traditional Persian bread)

• Shopkeepers proudly displaying local goods

Their warmth and hospitality made my trip unforgettable. Photography is always about connection, and Northern Iran reminded me of that in every interaction.

Final Reflections on Northern Iran Travel Photography

Looking back, my 2018 trip to Rasht and Bandar Anzali remains one of my favorite travel experiences. The blend of culture, history, and nature made it a paradise for photography — and a reminder of how special this part of Iran is.

If you ever have the chance to explore Northern Iran, I can’t recommend Rasht, Bandar Anzali, and the surrounding Gilan Province enough. Whether you’re there to photograph, learn, or simply experience, it’s a place that stays with you.
