Photographing large families is one of those sessions that’s both beautifully chaotic and incredibly rewarding. Sequential Group Shots: Start Big, Then Go Small

When working with big families, I like to start with full group portraits while everyone’s fresh and excited. We’ll find a scenic spot — maybe under the big cottonwoods or near one of the historic barns at Rock Ledge Ranch — and create that timeless family shot everyone will treasure.

From there, we’ll break it down into smaller family units. That’s when I start noticing all the little stories — a grandparent’s laugh, siblings hugging, or kids being goofy. Those micro-moments are where the magic really happens.

Embrace Spontaneity

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that kids make the best storytellers. When they’re running around, chasing each other, or giggling uncontrollably, that’s when the session truly comes alive. I never try to force stillness — instead, I embrace the chaos and let the energy lead.

Prioritize Comfort and Connection

When kids feel comfortable, they shine. I always suggest families bring snacks, water, and maybe a small blanket or toy — little things that help the kids relax and stay happy. A short break or quick snack moment can make a huge difference in energy levels and smiles.

I also encourage parents to let go of perfection. Kids will be kids — and that’s the beauty of it. The imperfect moments are often the most perfect ones.

Plan Ahead and Arrive Early

I always arrive early to Rock Ledge Ranch to scout the best light and find a few backup spots. The way the sun filters through the trees here is stunning — especially in the late afternoon. Arriving ahead of time helps me anticipate lighting shifts and keep the flow smooth once everyone arrives.

Photography Permit Requirements at Rock Ledge Ranch

If you’re planning a professional or portrait session at Rock Ledge Ranch, keep in mind that a photography permit is required for all portrait and professional work.

The site is protected as a historic landmark and managed by the City of Colorado Springs. To preserve its beauty and integrity, photographers must purchase a $50 same-day permit (one permit per photographer, per day). Permits can’t be pre-purchased and are limited daily, so it’s best to plan ahead.
