Twin Lakes and Independence Pass elopement

A Beautiful September Day in the Colorado Mountains

Some photography days feel like work.

And then there are days like this one.

On September 9, 2026, I drove from Colorado Springs into the mountains to meet Max and Ciera for their Twin Lakes and Independence Pass elopement. They had traveled all the way from Nebraska to Colorado with their daughter, Charlotte, and from the moment we met, the entire day just felt easy.

Max and Ciera were warm, genuine, relaxed, and completely themselves. There was no pressure to make the day feel like anything other than what it was: a celebration of their family, their relationship, and this new chapter of their lives.

And honestly, by the end of the session, I didn't really feel like I was leaving clients.

I felt like I was leaving friends.

Starting at Independence Pass

We started the afternoon at Independence Pass, one of those Colorado locations that makes you stop for a second and take it all in.

The mountains were wide open around us, the weather was beautiful, and despite being high in the mountains in early September, the temperature was comfortable. There was no rain, no storm rolling in, and none of the chaos that can sometimes come with photographing at high elevation.

Just mountains, sunshine, and a couple who were genuinely excited to be there.

Max and Ciera explored, laughed, walked together, and soaked in the scenery. Their daughter Charlotte was along for the adventure too, which made the day even more meaningful.

There is something really special about photographing an elopement when it isn't just about two people.

It's about a family.

Their daughter wasn't simply a guest tagging along for photographs. She was part of the story.

And that changed the feeling of the entire day.

Twin Lakes and Independence Pass Elopement With Their Daughter

One of my favorite things about this Twin Lakes and Independence Pass elopement was how naturally Max and Ciera included Charlotte.

We photographed the three of them together, captured quiet moments between the new parents and their daughter, and made plenty of room for the little in-between moments that weren't planned.

Those are often the photographs that become the most meaningful years later.

The tiny details.

The way a parent holds their newborn.

The little expressions.

The laughter between photographs.

The moments where nobody is thinking about the camera.

That's the kind of story I want to document.

If you're planning a Colorado elopement and want to bring your family or children along, you don't have to choose between having an intimate experience and including the people you love most. Your elopement can be whatever makes sense for your family.

My Colorado Elopement Guide can help you start thinking through locations, seasons, timelines, permits, and what an actual Colorado elopement can look like.

From the Mountains to Twin Lakes

After spending time at Independence Pass, we made our way toward Twin Lakes.

And this is where the day really started to slow down.

The landscape around Twin Lakes is incredible. Huge mountain walls rise above the water, and the entire area has this quiet, expansive feeling that works beautifully for an intimate Colorado elopement.

By the time we arrived, the afternoon light was getting warmer.

We walked around the lake, photographed Max and Ciera together, photographed them with Charlotte, and simply enjoyed the evening.

There was no need to rush.

That is one of the reasons I love giving couples enough time to explore more than one location. Instead of spending the entire session worrying about the clock, we could actually experience the landscape.

If you're considering locations like Twin Lakes, Independence Pass, or other mountain destinations, I've also put together a guide to the Best Places to Elope in Colorado.

Chasing the Last Light

We finished the session around sunset.

And that final stretch of the evening was one of my favorite parts.

The mountains softened in the evening light, the lake became calmer, and everything started to take on that warm Colorado glow.

Max and Ciera stood together in the landscape, their wedding clothes contrasting beautifully against the mountains around them.

After spending three hours together, it didn't feel like I was photographing strangers anymore.

It felt like I was documenting people I genuinely cared about.

That is one of my favorite parts of being an elopement photographer.

You get to meet people from all over the country, spend a few hours with them during one of the most meaningful days of their lives, and sometimes walk away feeling like you made new friends.

Max and Ciera were absolutely that kind of couple.

Why I Love Colorado Elopements

This is exactly why I love photographing elopements in Colorado.

They don't have to follow a traditional wedding timeline.

You can start at a mountain pass, drive to an alpine lake, bring your kids, stop whenever you see something beautiful, laugh when things don't go according to plan, and finish the day watching the sun disappear behind the mountains.

There is room to breathe.

There is room to be yourselves.

And there is room for the day to actually feel like your life, rather than a production.

You can see more real stories from couples I've photographed on my Colorado Elopement Stories page.

I also photographed another beautiful Nathan + Ross Twin Lakes & Independence Pass Elopement, which shows just how differently two couples can experience the same incredible landscape.

A Day I'll Remember

Driving home to Colorado Springs that evening, I kept thinking about how good the day had felt.

The weather cooperated.

The mountains were incredible.

The light was beautiful.

The photographs came together.

But honestly, those aren't the things I'll remember most.

I'll remember Max and Ciera.

I'll remember how easygoing they were.

I'll remember their excitement about bringing Charlotte along.

I'll remember how genuinely happy they seemed to be together.

And I'll remember that feeling at the end of the day when I realized that somewhere along the way, my clients had started to feel like friends.

That's the kind of experience I hope every couple gets from their elopement.

Not just beautiful photographs, but a day that feels like them.
