Independence Pass Colorado

Some summer days just stick with you — the kind where the mountains feel taller, the air feels fresher, and you can’t stop smiling. This trip to Twin Lakes, Colorado with my mom, sister, and our dog Aspen was one of those days.

We didn’t rush. No big agenda. Just time together in one of the most beautiful corners of the state.

The Drive Over Independence Pass

Getting to Twin Lakes means crossing Independence Pass, and honestly, that drive alone is worth the trip. Towering peaks, alpine meadows, and winding mountain roads make it hard not to pull over every few minutes for a photo.

Aspen (our dog, not the town) sat in the back seat with his head out the window, living his best life. His joy matched ours as the scenery opened up around every turn.

If you’re considering a Colorado elopement in this area, Independence Pass is one of the most breathtaking backdrops in the Rockies. I’ve photographed elopements here, and each time, it feels cinematic.

A Picnic by the Water

When we arrived, the turquoise water of the lakes shimmered under the summer sun. We found a quiet spot along the shore, unpacked a small picnic, and settled into the view.

It wasn’t fancy — just snacks, fruit, and plenty of water — but with mountains reflecting on the lake and wildflowers at our feet, it felt like a feast. Aspen sniffed the shoreline with curiosity, occasionally sitting down as if to simply admire it all.

Sometimes dogs just get it.

Exploring the Trails

After lunch, we wandered a few nearby trails. My mom and sister soaked in the mix of sunshine and cool alpine breeze, while I (true to form) took a few photographs.

I had an elopement session scheduled here a few days later, so I couldn’t resist making a mental note of a few magical photo spots. Still, the real focus that day wasn’t work — it was family, connection, and being outdoors together.

Why Days Like This Matter

Life moves fast. Between work, schedules, and deadlines, it’s easy to forget how important it is to pause.

This Twin Lakes trip reminded me that you don’t need elaborate plans to create lasting memories. Sometimes, all it takes is a picnic, a mountain view, and being present with the people (and pups) you love.

That’s also why I care so much about family photography sessions. It’s not just about photos — it’s about honoring those small, meaningful moments that we’ll want to remember years from now.

Final Thoughts

If you ever get the chance to visit Twin Lakes on Independence Pass, go. Bring the people you love. Bring snacks. And if you’re lucky enough to have a dog like Aspen, bring them too.

The mountains have a way of slowing you down, pulling you into the moment, and reminding you that the best part of any trip is who you share it with.
