Maroon Bells Surprise Proposal in Fall | Levi & Diana

There are some mornings in Colorado that remind you exactly why you love living here. The mountains, the golden aspens, the crisp autumn air, and the feeling that you're somewhere truly special. Levi and Diana's Maroon Bells surprise proposal was one of those mornings.

On October 5, 2026, I had the honor of photographing Levi as he asked Diana to marry him at one of Colorado's most breathtaking locations. With peak fall colors surrounding the valley, beautiful weather, and the iconic Maroon Bells rising behind them, the morning couldn't have been more beautiful.

And the best part? She said yes.

A Personal Connection That Made This Proposal Even More Special

One of my favorite things about being a photographer is when past connections find their way back into my life in unexpected ways.

Levi and I had actually lived in the same apartment complex and first met at our neighborhood dog park. So when he reached out to me about photographing his surprise proposal to Diana, it felt especially meaningful.

Helping someone you already know document such an important moment in their life is a different kind of honor. This wasn't just another photography session. It was a chance to help Levi preserve a memory that he and Diana will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

We planned a two-hour surprise proposal session at Maroon Bells, one of my favorite places in Colorado for its dramatic mountain scenery and incredible natural beauty.

An Early Morning Adventure to Maroon Bells

To make sure everything went smoothly, I drove to Glenwood Springs the day before the proposal and stayed at a charming barn-style Airbnb hosted by Jim.

The place had so much character, and it was a wonderful spot to settle in before an early start. Jim was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the stay even better.

If you're visiting the area and looking for a unique place to stay, you can check out Jim's Red Barn Suite at Four Mile Creek Guest Cabins on Airbnb.

The next morning, my alarm went off around 4:30 a.m. It was an early start, but photographing a surprise proposal at Maroon Bells during fall color season was absolutely worth it.

There's something special about getting up before sunrise for a photography session. The world is still quiet, the day feels full of possibility, and you know you're about to witness a moment that will mean everything to someone.

I made my way toward Aspen, ready for the morning ahead.

Maroon Bells During Peak Fall Colors

If you've ever seen photographs of Maroon Bells in autumn, you already know how extraordinary this place can be. The twin peaks rise above Maroon Lake, surrounded by evergreen forests, rugged alpine terrain, and hillsides that turn brilliant shades of gold when the aspens change color.

But experiencing it in person during peak fall colors is something else entirely.

For Levi and Diana's Maroon Bells surprise proposal, the timing was incredible. Golden aspens filled the valley, the mountains stood tall against the sky, and the weather was gorgeous. The entire landscape seemed to glow with autumn color.

The combination of the warm fall tones and the dramatic mountains created a beautiful setting for their photographs without needing much more than the natural surroundings.

Maroon Bells is one of those rare locations where you can capture intimate moments between two people while still showing the incredible scale of the Colorado landscape. The mountains provide a dramatic backdrop, but the photographs are ultimately about the people standing in front of them.

That balance is one of the reasons I love photographing couples here.

The Moment Levi Asked Diana to Marry Him

There's a unique kind of anticipation that comes with photographing a surprise proposal.

One person knows exactly what's about to happen, while the other is simply experiencing an ordinary morning that is about to become extraordinary.

Levi and Diana were so sweet together. The way they looked at each other, the natural connection between them, and the little moments they shared made photographing their session such a joy.

And then came the moment Levi had been planning.

Surrounded by golden aspens and the towering peaks of Maroon Bells, Levi asked Diana to marry him.

She said yes.

As a photographer, I get to witness some incredibly meaningful moments, but there's always something special about a proposal. It's a split second when excitement, surprise, happiness, and the realization of a new chapter all come together.

My job is to preserve those feelings as honestly as possible. Not just the big moment itself, but the expressions, the reactions, the hugs, the laughter, and all the little details that happen immediately afterward.

I'm so grateful I got to capture that experience for Levi and Diana.

Celebrating Their Engagement in the Colorado Mountains

After the proposal, we spent the rest of our two-hour session celebrating and documenting this exciting new chapter in their lives.

One of my favorite parts of engagement photography is getting couples comfortable enough to forget about the camera. Instead of concentrating on poses, I want people to interact naturally, enjoy being together, and give themselves permission to have fun.

Levi and Diana made that easy.

They were adorable together, and their connection came through in so many of the photographs. We captured portraits surrounded by the golden fall landscape, closer moments that highlighted their relationship, and wider compositions that showed off the spectacular mountain scenery.

The ring deserved a few photographs of its own, too.

I especially love how their clothing complemented the warm autumn palette. Their earthy plaid patterns and neutral tones fit beautifully into the landscape, letting the golden trees and dramatic mountains add color and depth to the images.

The result was a collection of photographs that felt both adventurous and personal. They celebrated not only the fact that Levi and Diana were engaged, but also the experience of sharing that moment together in one of Colorado's most beautiful places.

If you're dreaming of an engagement session that feels like an adventure rather than a traditional studio portrait session, you can explore my engagement and surprise proposal packages.

Planning Your Own Maroon Bells Surprise Proposal

Maroon Bells is an incredible place to propose, particularly in autumn. However, planning a surprise proposal here takes a little preparation, especially if you're hoping to experience the fall colors at their best.

Here are a few things I'd recommend if you're considering proposing at Maroon Bells.

Plan around the fall colors. Aspen color timing changes from year to year depending on weather and seasonal conditions. Late September and early October can be beautiful, but peak color isn't guaranteed on a specific date. Keep your plans flexible when possible.

Think about timing. An early start can help you enjoy the scenery before the busiest part of the day. It also gives you time to relax and celebrate after the proposal. Access arrangements and transportation requirements can vary by season, so check the current Maroon Bells visitor information before choosing your date and arrival time.

Have a clear proposal plan. The person proposing should know where to go, where the photographer will be, and how the moment will unfold. A little planning behind the scenes helps the actual proposal feel natural.

Choose a photographer who understands surprise proposals. Experience matters when photographing a moment that cannot be repeated. I help plan the location, timing, and logistics so you can focus on the person you're asking to spend your life with.

Make time for photographs afterward. Once the surprise is over, the pressure disappears. You can celebrate, enjoy the scenery, and create photographs that reflect your relationship. That's where some of the most meaningful images happen.

If you're exploring other destinations around the state, I've also put together a guide to the best places to elope in Colorado.
