A Pikes Peak Surprise Proposal at Crystal Creek Reservoir | Moises + Cesia
There are few places in Colorado that feel quite as special as Pikes Peak, especially when you're standing beside a mountain lake with the summit rising above you. For Cesia and Moises, that setting became the backdrop for a moment they—and their families—will never forget.
Moises had planned a surprise proposal for Cesia at Crystal Creek Reservoir along the Pikes Peak Highway, with their closest family members gathered nearby to witness the moment. Their families had traveled all the way from Houston, Texas, to be together for this special occasion, making the evening even more meaningful.
We arrived about two hours before sunset, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the mountain, find the perfect place for the proposal, and make the most of the evening.
And Cesia had no idea what was coming.
A Surprise Proposal at Crystal Creek Reservoir
Crystal Creek Reservoir is one of those places that can make a Colorado proposal feel like a true adventure. Sitting high on Pikes Peak, the reservoir offers alpine scenery, mountain views, and the kind of setting that feels completely different from a typical proposal location.
Moises had originally asked about proposing at one of my favorite spots in Garden of the Gods. But after talking through the experience, I suggested Crystal Creek Reservoir for the actual proposal.
The reason was simple: privacy and the experience of the moment.
Instead of having the proposal happen at a more public overlook, Crystal Creek gave Moises and Cesia a quieter setting beside the water, with Pikes Peak rising dramatically behind them.
It turned out to be the perfect choice.
With their family members nearby and everyone quietly waiting for the right moment, Moises finally had his chance.
He got down on one knee.
Cesia said yes.
And just like that, the secret was out.
The families came together to celebrate, and we spent some time capturing photographs beside the reservoir with the lake and Pikes Peak as the backdrop.
The wind was definitely making itself known that evening, but the conditions only added to the feeling of being high in the mountains. The scenery was incredible, and the excitement of the moment made everything else seem secondary.
When Family Gets to Witness the Moment
One of the things that made this Pikes Peak surprise proposal especially meaningful was that Moises and Cesia weren't celebrating alone.
Their closest family members had traveled from Houston, Texas, to Colorado to be there for this moment. They were close enough to watch the entire proposal unfold, and afterward we gathered beside the lake for family photographs and plenty of congratulations.
There is something incredibly special about photographing a proposal when the people who matter most are standing just a few steps away.
These aren't simply photographs of a couple getting engaged. They're photographs of a family coming together to celebrate a new chapter.
And those are the kinds of photographs that become even more meaningful as the years go by.
A Little Colorado Wildlife Along the Way
One of the best parts of photographing adventures in Colorado is that you never quite know what you're going to encounter.
During our time on Pikes Peak, we also came across bighorn sheep.
Of course, we had to stop and take it all in.
We also made a quick stop at Parking Lot 2 along the Pikes Peak Highway, where we got out of the car and captured a few photographs before continuing down the mountain.
It was one of those little spontaneous moments that you can't necessarily plan into an itinerary—and that's exactly what makes an adventure session feel like an adventure.
The proposal itself was the centerpiece of the evening, but these unexpected moments became part of their story too.
From Pikes Peak to Garden of the Gods
After the proposal, family photographs, wildlife sightings, and our quick stop along the highway, the adventure wasn't over.
We got back into my car and headed down toward Garden of the Gods, where we continued their engagement session at several of my favorite locations.
Moses had originally been interested in one of the popular viewpoints around Garden of the Gods, including the High Point area. Since we'd already created a more private proposal experience at Crystal Creek Reservoir, we were able to use Garden of the Gods for the second half of the evening—giving them a completely different Colorado backdrop for their photographs.
And this is one of my favorite ways to photograph a Colorado proposal.
You don't necessarily have to choose between mountain lakes and dramatic red rocks.
When the timing and logistics work, you can build an entire experience around multiple locations.
For Moises and Cesia, the evening went from an alpine reservoir high on Pikes Peak to the massive sandstone formations of Garden of the Gods.
Two very different landscapes.
One unforgettable evening.
Golden Light at Garden of the Gods
We started at the High Point area, where the views opened up across the park and the surrounding landscape. As the sun continued to drop, the light became softer and warmer, creating beautiful conditions for portraits.
From there, we explored some of the areas near Parking Lot 10, including views toward Gray Rock and the surrounding formations.
We also made our way toward the lake for a few more photographs before finding the aspen trees nearby.
The combination of the red rocks, mountain scenery, water, and aspens gave us an incredible variety of photographs without needing to turn the session into a rushed photo tour.
That variety is one of the reasons I love photographing couples in Colorado. A single evening can feel like several different adventures.
And for Moises and Cesia, it really was.
They started their evening beside a mountain lake on Pikes Peak, celebrated with their families, encountered Colorado wildlife, explored several viewpoints along the highway, and finished among the red rocks and aspens of Garden of the Gods.
That's a pretty good way to celebrate getting engaged.
Planning a Pikes Peak Surprise Proposal

The location matters, but so does the experience.
Where will you park? How much walking is involved? How crowded might the location be?
What happens if the weather changes? Where can your family wait without giving away the surprise? What time should you arrive to get the best light?
And perhaps most importantly:
How do you actually keep the proposal a surprise?
These are the details that can make the difference between simply showing up somewhere beautiful and having a proposal that feels intentionally planned from beginning to end.

More Than Just a Proposal
What I loved most about Moises and Cesia's evening was that the proposal wasn't treated as a single moment.
It was an entire experience.
Their families traveled from Texas to be there.
Moises planned the surprise.
Cesia said yes overlooking the reservoir and Pikes Peak.
Everyone celebrated together beside the lake.
We spotted bighorn sheep along the mountain.
We stopped at Parking Lot 2 for a few photographs.
Then we headed down the mountain and continued the evening among the red rocks, lake, and aspens of Garden of the Gods.
By the end of the session, they had photographs that captured not only the proposal itself, but the entire adventure surrounding it.
And that's what I love most about photographing couples in Colorado.
The photographs are important, but the experience behind them is what makes them meaningful.
