Mount Bierstadt is one of the most popular Colorado 14ers, located along Guanella Pass near Georgetown. Because of its relatively short route and easy access from Denver, it’s often one of the first high peaks hikers attempt.
Standing at 14,065 feet, Mount Bierstadt offers sweeping alpine views, a well-defined trail, and an approachable introduction to hiking Colorado’s highest mountains.
This Mount Bierstadt hiking guide covers the standard route from Guanella Pass Trailhead, what the climb feels like, and what to expect on your way to the summit.
For me, this climb marked my second Colorado 14er and another step toward my goal of hiking all 58 peaks.
You can follow the entire project in my Colorado 14er Hiking Guide, where I document every summit along the way.
This climb is 14er #2 of 58.

Mount Bierstadt is widely considered one of the most beginner-friendly Colorado 14ers, which explains its popularity.
Getting to the Guanella Pass Trailhead
The Guanella Pass Trailhead sits between Georgetown and Grant along the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway.
Because of its proximity to Denver, it’s one of the most heavily visited trailheads for Colorado 14ers.
The parking area is large, but during peak summer weekends it can fill quickly. Starting early is strongly recommended.
The trail begins immediately from the parking lot and crosses alpine wetlands before gradually gaining elevation toward the upper slopes of Mount Bierstadt.
Car Camping Near the Mount Bierstadt Trailhead
I arrived the night before and slept in my car near the trailhead.
It’s not glamorous, but it works perfectly when you want an early alpine start.
The quiet mountain air, the cold night, and the anticipation of the climb make these pre-hike evenings something special.
By 4:30 a.m., I was already on the trail.
Headlamp on. Crisp air. Silence all around.
Exactly how I like to start a mountain day.
Mount Bierstadt Route Overview
The standard route begins at the Guanella Pass Trailhead and starts by crossing alpine wetlands and wooden boardwalk sections.
These boardwalks help protect the fragile tundra ecosystem while guiding hikers across the marshy terrain.
After the wetlands, the trail gradually climbs into open alpine tundra. The route is well defined and easy to follow.
Mount Bierstadt does not require technical climbing, but the thin air and steady elevation gain quickly remind you that you are hiking above 13,000 feet.
The final section approaches the broad summit ridge before reaching the top.
The Climb to the Summit
After the first couple of miles, the hike becomes more about rhythm than speed.
Step by step, the mountain begins to reveal its views. The surrounding peaks rise higher, the horizon stretches farther, and the summit ridge slowly comes into view.
That mental shift happens somewhere along the climb where casual hiking turns into focused forward progress.
It’s exactly what makes reaching the summit so satisfying.
A Photographer’s Lesson on the Summit
At the summit, I ran into an unexpected lesson.
While photographing the views, I accidentally scratched my camera lens because I didn’t have my lens hood attached.
At first, I was frustrated. But standing at 14,065 feet, watching the sunrise over the mountains, it quickly felt less important.
The moment was still there. The memory was still captured.
Thankfully, my gear is insured through Professional Photographers of America, so the lens will be replaced.
Still, it was a reminder to always protect your equipment in alpine environments.
Safety Tips for Hiking Colorado 14ers
Even though Mount Bierstadt is considered a beginner-friendly 14er, the altitude and alpine environment still require preparation.
Important considerations include:
• Sudden weather changes
• Afternoon thunderstorms in summer
• Altitude sickness
• Wind exposure above treeline
• Limited shelter on the mountain
Starting early and checking weather conditions before your hike can make a big difference.
The mountains will always be there if you need to turn around.
