Instead of panicking, we pivoted.
That’s one of the things I always remind couples during the planning process. Sometimes the unexpected creates something even better.
We quickly made the decision that morning to move the proposal session to Garden of the Gods, and honestly, it could not have worked out more perfectly.
The soft morning light, the red rock formations, and the quiet atmosphere made the entire experience feel calm and intimate from the start.
A Sunrise Garden of the Gods Surprise Proposal
Patrick absolutely nailed the surprise.
Robin had no idea what was coming, and watching the moment unfold with Pikes Peak quietly sitting in the background was incredible to witness. The emotion, the excitement, the nerves beforehand, and then the instant relief and happiness afterward are exactly why I love photographing proposals so much.
This was a simple and meaningful 30-minute proposal session, which honestly worked perfectly for the experience they wanted. Sometimes shorter sessions create the most natural moments because couples can stay fully present without overcomplicating the experience.
I was able to photograph the proposal itself while also capturing video throughout the session, which added another layer to preserving the memory for them.
That combination of photo and video has become something I’ve really enjoyed offering during certain sessions because it helps bring the moment back to life in a completely different way.
If you’re currently planning your own Colorado surprise proposal, Garden of the Gods continues to be one of my favorite locations for couples visiting Colorado Springs. It’s accessible, incredibly scenic, and works beautifully at sunrise.
Why Garden of the Gods Works So Well for Proposals
One of the reasons couples love planning proposals at Garden of the Gods is because it offers an incredible balance between accessibility and scenery.
You can experience dramatic Colorado landscapes without needing an intense hike or long drive into the mountains. Sunrise sessions especially feel peaceful before the park gets busy later in the day.
For surprise proposals, that calm atmosphere matters a lot.
It gives couples space to slow down, be present, and actually experience the moment together instead of feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
If you’re still deciding where to propose, my Colorado Engagement & Surprise Proposal Packages and Pricing page goes over session options, planning help, and what the experience looks like from start to finish.

Colorado Weather Always Keeps Things Interesting
One thing this session perfectly demonstrated is why flexibility matters when planning mountain sessions in Colorado.
Weather can change quickly, especially around higher elevations like Pikes Peak. Having backup plans and local knowledge makes a huge difference when things don’t go exactly as expected.
Luckily, Colorado Springs has no shortage of beautiful locations nearby. Sessions can still feel intentional and meaningful even when plans shift at the last second.
For couples considering mountain proposal locations, I always help with:
Backup planning
Timing recommendations
Lighting guidance
Crowd considerations
Weather adjustments
Location flexibility
That way the experience still feels smooth and stress-free no matter what Colorado decides to do that day.

Alongside photographing the proposal, I was also able to capture video throughout the experience to help preserve the emotion and atmosphere of the morning in a different way.
Watching the nerves, excitement, and reactions unfold in motion always brings these moments back to life in such a meaningful way.

Hoping to Photograph Their Wedding Next
One of the coolest parts about proposal sessions is seeing where the story goes afterward.
Patrick and Robin are now engaged, and I’d genuinely be honored if they trusted me to document their wedding day as well. Being invited into these moments, from the proposal all the way through the wedding day, is something I never take lightly.
Colorado has a way of creating unforgettable stories, even when plans change unexpectedly.
And honestly, this one turned out exactly the way it was supposed to.
