There’s something about Manitou Springs that feels effortlessly romantic. Tucked at the base of Pikes Peak, this little mountain town blends colorful storefronts, historic charm, mountain views, art, coffee shops, and quiet moments in a way that feels uniquely Colorado.
Matt and Mallory’s downtown manitou springs engagement session felt less like a traditional photoshoot and more like wandering through town together on a slow afternoon date night. We explored side streets, paused under glowing string lights, laughed between storefronts, and let the town naturally guide the session from one moment to the next.
For couples looking for a location that feels artistic, relaxed, adventurous, and intimate all at once, Downtown Manitou Springs is honestly one of my favorite places to photograph in Colorado.
Why Downtown Manitou Springs Is Perfect for Engagement Photos
One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions in Manitou Springs is the variety. Within a short walking distance, you get:
mountain-town charm
colorful murals and historic buildings
creekside paths and bridges
cozy coffee shop energy
beautiful foothill scenery
soft evening light bouncing through downtown
It gives couples a really natural mix of urban and outdoorsy without needing to drive all over Colorado Springs.
And if you want even more variety, Garden of the Gods is only about 10 minutes away and pairs beautifully with a downtown session.
The Atmosphere of Matt & Mallory’s Session
Matt and Mallory were incredibly easygoing from the start, which always makes sessions flow naturally. Instead of forcing overly posed moments, we focused on movement, conversation, laughter, and simply letting them enjoy being together.
That’s always my goal during engagement sessions.
I want couples to feel like themselves.
Some of my favorite images from their session came from the in-between moments:
walking hand-in-hand through downtown
laughing between poses
stopping spontaneously when the light looked beautiful
quiet moments near the creek
dancing together beneath the evening lights
Those are usually the moments people connect with most years later because they actually feel real.
Best Time for a Downtown Manitou Springs Engagement Session
The best lighting in downtown Manitou Springs usually happens during the final hour before sunset.
That softer evening light creates:
warmer skin tones
softer contrast
glowing storefronts
beautiful mountain atmosphere
less crowded streets
Morning sessions can also be incredibly peaceful, especially if you want quieter streets and cooler temperatures.
Colorado weather can shift quickly though, especially near the mountains, so flexibility always helps. If you’re visiting from out of state, my How to Plan a Colorado Elopement From Out of State guide also shares helpful planning tips that apply to engagement sessions too.
What to Wear for Your Manitou Springs Engagement Session
Manitou Springs has a very artistic and relaxed personality, so outfits that feel comfortable and authentic usually photograph best.
I typically recommend:
earth tones
soft neutrals
layered textures
flowy dresses
sweaters
denim
natural colors that complement the mountain scenery
Most importantly though, wear something that actually feels like you.
When couples feel comfortable, everything looks more natural on camera.

A Full Story Beyond Engagement Photos
One thing that made this session extra meaningful for me was that I had actually photographed Mallory before with her dogs at Garden of the Gods.
That session was full of muddy paws, laughter, personality, and the same warmth she brought into this engagement session with Matt.
You can see that session here:
Honestly, one of my favorite parts about photography is getting to document different chapters of people’s lives over time.
Planning Your Own Downtown Manitou Springs Engagement Session
If you’re thinking about planning your own downtown manitou springs engagement session, here are a few things I’d recommend:
arrive early since parking can get busy
bring comfortable walking shoes
plan around golden hour for the best light
stay flexible with Colorado weather
consider combining the session with nearby Red Rock Canyon Open Space or Garden of the Gods engagement photos
Every couple connects differently with locations, so I always help guide clients toward places that feel most natural for their personalities and vision.

Final Thoughts
Matt and Mallory’s engagement session perfectly captured what makes Manitou Springs feel so special: relaxed energy, mountain charm, creativity, spontaneity, and genuine connection.
These are the kinds of sessions I love most. Nothing overly forced. Just real moments in beautiful places.
If you’re planning your own engagement session in Colorado, I’d love to help create something personal, relaxed, and meaningful for you too.
